Psalms
The unfiltered songbook of the human soul
The book of Psalms is a collection of 150 sacred poems, songs, and prayers. King David wrote about half of them, while others were penned by musicians like Asaph, the sons of Korah, Solomon, Moses, and anonymous writers. Compiled over centuries—from the Exodus around 1400 BC to the return from Babylonian exile around 400 BC—it became the hymnbook for Israel's public worship and private devotion.
Psalms is the songbook of the unfiltered human experience. It captures every emotion imaginable: soaring joy, profound gratitude, seething anger, paralyzing doubt, and crushing grief. It teaches us that faith is not about pretending everything is fine. Instead, it invites us to bring our raw, honest selves to a God who can handle our most difficult questions.
Whether you are celebrating on the mountaintop or weeping in the valley, there is a Psalm that gives voice to your exact condition. For the honest skeptic and the ordinary adult, Psalms offers a vocabulary for the soul, showing us how to talk to God when our theology doesn't seem to match our reality.
