Numbers

The long walk through the wilderness

Numbers captures the messy, forty-year transition of a group of former slaves into a nation. Traditionally attributed to Moses, it records the census lists and logistics of a desert migration, but its heart is a raw psychological study of what happens when a community’s fear clashes with their future.

For an ordinary reader, Numbers is a mirror. It documents the self-sabotage that occurs when we prefer the safety of our past miseries over the uncertainty of new growth. It shows that while getting out of a bad situation happens in a moment, getting the old habits out of the person takes a lifetime.

The New Testament looks back at this book as a warning: the same patterns of grumbling and lack of trust that stalled the Israelites still threaten to stall us today. It is a gritty, honest look at the discipline required to actually reach a promise.
