Haggai

Priorities in the Rubble

Haggai is a brief, punchy collection of four messages delivered in 520 BCE to Jewish exiles who had returned to a ruined Jerusalem. While other prophets focus on abstract justice, Haggai is a project manager with a spiritual lens, confronting a community that had prioritized their own comfort over their communal identity and purpose.

Traditional scholarship attributes the book to the prophet Haggai himself, though it is written in the third person as a historical record of his short, effective four-month campaign. He is one of the few prophets who actually saw immediate results from his preaching.

For the modern reader, Haggai is a case study in 'stuckness.' It asks why we often feel unfulfilled despite our busy lives and offers a direct path toward realignment by focusing on what we are building together rather than just for ourselves.
