Deuteronomy

A Farewell Speech for a New Generation

Deuteronomy is essentially a series of farewell speeches delivered by Moses to the Israelites as they camp on the edge of the Promised Land. After forty years of wandering in the desert, a new generation is about to step into a new life, and Moses needs to make sure they don't repeat the mistakes of their parents.

While tradition attributes the book to Moses, many scholars believe it was compiled or edited later during the reign of King Josiah to spark a national spiritual reform. It acts as the 'heart' of the Old Testament, summarizing the laws given at Mount Sinai and framing them as a choice between life and death.

For a modern reader, Deuteronomy is a profound meditation on memory and gratitude. It asks how we can keep our values intact when life gets comfortable and why a relationship with God is based on love rather than just blind obedience.
