2 Timothy
A final letter on courage, truth, and finishing the race.
2 Timothy is widely regarded as the Apostle Paul's final surviving letter, written from a cold Roman dungeon around AD 64-67. Unlike his earlier imprisonment where he expected release, Paul knows this is the end of the line. He is facing execution under Emperor Nero, and many of his former allies have abandoned him in fear.
He writes this highly personal letter to Timothy, his younger protégé and the leader of the church in Ephesus. Timothy is facing mounting opposition, false teachers, and the heavy burden of leadership. Paul's goal isn't to micromanage the church, but to steel Timothy's courage for the days ahead.
For a modern reader, 2 Timothy offers a striking picture of what it looks like to face death with peace. It asks what we are passing on to the next generation, how to handle a culture of outrage and empty arguments, and what it takes to stay faithful when following God costs us everything.
