1 Thessalonians

A letter of relief, affection, and hope.

Around 50 CE, Paul arrived in the bustling Roman city of Thessalonica, started a small community of Jesus followers, and was almost immediately run out of town by a violent mob. Forced to leave before he could finish teaching them, he spent months agonizing over whether these new believers would cave under the intense social pressure and persecution.

When his friend Timothy finally brought news that the Thessalonians were not only surviving but thriving, Paul penned this letter—likely the oldest surviving document in the entire New Testament. It is a deeply personal, emotional letter written by a relieved mentor to people he loves like his own children.

For an ordinary reader today, 1 Thessalonians offers a striking look at the early Christian movement before institutions and church buildings existed. It asks timeless questions: How do we endure hostility? How do we grieve those we've lost? And how do we live a quiet, radically good life in a chaotic world?
