1 John

A letter about love, truth, and knowing where you stand.

While the text is anonymous, this letter is traditionally attributed to John the Apostle. It was likely written around 85-95 CE to a network of early house churches near Ephesus that had just endured a traumatic and deeply confusing split.

A group of prominent leaders had walked out, taking many members with them. These breakaway teachers claimed to possess special, elevated spiritual knowledge. They argued that physical actions—like wrestling with sin or how you treat your community—didn't matter as long as your spirit was enlightened. The people left behind were reeling, second-guessing themselves, and doubting their own standing with God.

1 John is a raw, pastoral reality check written to reassure them. For anyone who has been hurt by toxic church dynamics, encountered manipulative spiritual leaders, or wrestled with doubt, this letter offers a grounding test. True spirituality isn't found in secret knowledge or claims of perfection, but in owning our messes and actively loving the real, flawed people right in front of us.
