1 Chronicles

Rebuilding identity from the roots up

1 Chronicles was written for a community of refugees returning to a ruined home. Likely compiled by a priest or scribe (traditionally Ezra) in the 4th century BCE, it serves as a massive project of cultural recovery for people who had lost their kingdom, their temple, and their confidence.

For the modern reader, this book is an exercise in 'remembering who you are.' It skips over the scandalous failures found in other history books to focus instead on a vision of what a society looks like when it is centered on spiritual purpose and communal worship.

It reminds us that even after a total collapse, we can rebuild by looking back at our heritage and deciding which values are worth carrying into the future.
